We will be using a simple software suite of publishing tools from WordPress, which will allow us to publish text, audio, video and pictures on the Web without too much trouble. There is a simple set of instructions for grabbing this -- and it's related -- software.

Throughout the semester, you will need to download such things as:

1. The WordPress suite
2. Upgrades for the suite
3. Widgets
4. Themes

All of these elements will be on this site and you'll follow the same basic protocol.

Downloading WordPress:

1. Go to http://www.wordpress.org
2. Along the top navigation (on the far righ), click on Download
3. On the right side, there are two options for downloading. Click the "Download WordPress 2.7" button. Always choose the option that has .zip.
4. Save that Zip file on your desktop (make sure it's your desktop for right now).
5. Once you are finished, make sure you sign up for a WordPress.com account (this is different than the WordPress.org files you have just downloaded.)
   1. The last question will ask you if you want a URL or simply a username. Since you have registered a URL already, you simply need a username.

Once it's downloaded, you will need to extract it from the Zip file to use it. This is simple.

Extracting From A Zip File:

1. Click on the "Wordpress-2.7" zip file
2. This will take you to another file called "Wordpress-2.7". While it looks the same, it's not. In the FILE menu along the top, click on "Extract All".

This will pull all the files out. You'll want to delete the "Wordpress-2.7" zip file from your computer now. You can't use those files. Instead, use the files from the "Wordpress-2.7" file. Confusing? A little bit. The best way (on a PC) to see which file you have, click on the VIEW button and click on "Details". That view will let you know which is the compressed (ZIP) file and which isn't.
